Meet the team

We're a small team in Vancouver building the study tool we kept wishing existed. Here's a little about each of us, in our own words.

Bruce

Co-founder

Hi, I'm Bruce, co-founder at Gravity. I'm a senior Computer Science student at the University of British Columbia, and with years of software industry experience, solving problems through code is second nature to me. At Gravity, I handle everything from end-to-end development to product direction. Having lived in Canada, China, and Japan, I'm fluent in English, French, Mandarin, and proficient in Japanese. As a lifelong language learner, Gravity is an idea I've had for a long time, and the kind of app I always wished existed.

Kevin

Co-founder

Hi, I'm Kevin, co-founder of Gravity, where I lead marketing and distribution! I have an extensive technical background and pitch in across the stack wherever I'm needed most. I'm proficient in Japanese through a mix of classroom study and a summer of exchange in Japan, and I'm currently learning Mandarin, my heritage tongue. Having worked through many different acquisition techniques and tools myself, I understand deeply how overwhelming the ecosystem can feel for learners just starting out, and I aim to lower the barrier to fluency.

Kelvin

Co-founder

Hey, I'm Kelvin. Co-founder of Gravity here. While I mostly do dev work and operational work I've been experimenting with marketing and distribution with guidance from Kevin! I have lots of technical background from mobile development to big full stack projects and can float around wherever I'm needed. I come from a Chinese background and can speak three different Chinese languages, and my experience of Japanese comes from not only textbooks and classroom exposure but also actually experiencing living in Tokyo first hand. The learning curve is steep and my goal is to flatten it out without compromising on actually learning the material itself.

Thomas

Developer

Hey, I'm Thomas, a dev at Gravity. I'm a recent Computer Engineering graduate from l'École Polytechnique de Montréal, and I joined the team with established technical experience across the software industry. At Gravity, I'm responsible for architecting the backend infrastructure and managing the system's scalability. Although I'm originally from Quebec, I lived all across Canada while growing up and had the opportunity to live in Taiwan for a semester while in school. I speak French and English natively, I also speak Chinese, and German is on its way. I work on Gravity because I'm driven by complex technical challenges and impactful software that isn't only used by others, but that I use as well.

Developer

Hi, I'm James, a developer here at Gravity. Before Gravity, I studied Computer Science at the University of Queensland, and worked as a developer specializing in Android and Flutter. My experience living in multiple countries, including China, Canada, Australia, and Japan, has deeply shaped my worldview. Here, I'm responsible for the frontend interface you see on the mobile app. I speak English and Chinese natively, and Japanese fluently. I work on Gravity because I'm passionate about the mission of helping people learn languages. I hope our product can bring people from diverse backgrounds closer together.

Bethia

UX/UI advisor and content creator

Yo, I'm Bethia, a UX/UI advisor and content creator at Gravity. I'm currently a student in the New Media Design and Web Development program at BCIT. I'm a beginner in terms of working in the tech and design industry, but some experience I have is competing in Skills Canada, making it from Regionals to Nationals, and winning bronze in the National Graphic Design competition. At Gravity, I'm responsible for creating content and giving insight on various aspects such as design and brand direction! Other than knowing English natively, I speak conversational Mandarin and can understand bits of Taiwanese. I'm currently learning Mandarin and Japanese, and want to start learning Spanish soon. I joined and work on Gravity because I believe our application's use case will help many people in their language journey, and I want people to find us and our community.
